Pentagon Investigation Finds Defense Secretary Put Military Personnel in Danger with Signal Chat.

A highly anticipated Department of Defense review has concluded that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth breached departmental policies by sharing secret intelligence in a private Signal group, as stated by a person briefed on the findings.

Particulars of the Incident

The chat group in question contained details about a planned airstrike in Yemen targeting Houthi fighters. This discussion was revealed after a reporter for the Atlantic was included as a participant.

Other officials in the chat reportedly included JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and former security advisor Mike Waltz. The report focused solely on the conduct of Hegseth, as the other participants are not employed at the Pentagon.

Signal is a commercially offered communication application that was not authorized for transmitting classified information.

Serious Threat to Troops

The inspector general's report determined that the information circulated by Hegseth was secret and posed a risk to the safety of US service members if it had been intercepted by a foreign enemy force.

However, the report also noted that Hegseth had the ability to declassify the information he shared, though it was not specified whether he formally exercised that authority.

Hegseth's Reaction

The source said that Hegseth declined an interview by the investigators. Instead, he submitted a brief written statement.

In his statement, Hegseth claimed he only disclosed information that would not have endangered personnel or jeopardized the mission. He further stated that he had the right to downgrade information and viewed the inspector general to be politically motivated.

Next Steps

The finalized investigation has been shared with Congress. An publicly releasable copy is expected to be released in the coming days.
